Deep Texas Soul
Gospel and blues in east Texas
Blues and gospel music have a rich tradition in East Texas. For years, slaves and sharecroppers sang songs to help them through their daily lives, and to celebrate the richness they still found in living. Both blues and gospel arose from an African American tradition and form the basis for much of modern American popular music. In some ways, blues music was a form of expressing one's struggles, and gospel music was a means of moving beyond that suffering.
