In 2011, I was awarded a fellowship from the National Association of State Foresters and the National Network of Forest Practitioners to travel the country for the summer and document America's forests in honor of the International Year of the Forests. In the course of eight weeks, I visited West Virginia, Texas, Missouri, South Dakota, Montana, and Maryland. Along the way, I documented the people and issues of forestry, from invasive bark beetles to wildfire and deforestation to family sawmills and lonesome foresters.
